Factory Girl

factory girl

As part of the ACE ARKO Cultural Exchange Programme we are producing a UK tour of Factory Girl by Korean performance company Yangson Project.

Ok-soon is a young girl working in a Japanese factory during the Korean industrial boom of the 1930s. Silently she endures the back breaking work and oppressive conditions. One day she is ordered by the foreman to spy on her friend, who they suspect of rallying the workers. What she hears and events that follow make Ok-soon decide the time has come to find her voice.

Combining spoken word, movement and sound, an ensemble cast of four performers bring Ok-soon’s story to life. A unique opportunity to see this exciting company’s first UK performance.

Based on a short story written by YU, Jin-oh, the original text was published serially in a daily newspaper, the Chosun Ilbo, over 16 times in 1931.

Yangson Project is a collaboration between actors Sang-kyu Son, Jo-ah Yang and Jong-ook Yang and director Ji-hye Park.

Through the staging of novels and short stories, Yangson Project studies new theatrical languages, including narrative acting. The company has toured China, Japan and France and performed at various theatres in Korea, including Doosan Art Center, Namsan Drama Center, and the National Theater of Korea.
